Creative Process: “Elvis & Aliens vs. Bigfoot”…

My artwork always begins as a rough sketch just to get the idea down on paper: this particular  piece began as a doodle on a bar-napkin. (top left)

Once I decide to move forward with an idea, I gather inspiration: the cover of this issue of GIJoe comics stood out in my memory as an excellent example of what someone hanging from an aircraft in flight looks like. (right)

I’ve also been really inspired lately by the work of colorist, Matt Wagner. (panel from Papergirls – bottom left)

 

Next, I get a feel for my subject matter – here are two pages from my sketchbook working out Bigfoot and Elvis as well as some early attempts at the overall composition.

Here, I slowly work out the layout and composition, building up the drawing little by little.

Then, I break out my markers and decide on the color palette. I create a full-sized version of the piece to see how the colors look together.

This is the final piece in four steps:

Pencils – Pentel mechanical pencil with 9mm HB graphite.

Color – Prismacolor markers.

Inks – Pentel brush pen & Uniball Vision (Micro.)

Corrections – I make corrections for display online using Adobe Photoshop.
